105,000 contribution to Christchurch appeal

Media release

6 April 2011

$105,000 contribution to Christchurch appeal

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) members have raised over $100,000 to aid the Christchurch earthquake recovery and rebuild effort.

NZICA’s 32,000 members locally and worldwide gave generously to the fund. Their efforts were combined with proceeds gained from a new BMW, won by NZICA through a newspaper subscription competition.

The BMW 320d Touring Edition Sport was auctioned on Trade Me in March. It fetched $75,000 as part of NZICA’s fundraising and significantly kick-started the appeal says NZICA Chief Executive, Terry McLaughlin.

“Winning the BMW was a pleasant surprise, once the Christchurch earthquake occurred it was quickly apparent what we should do with it. As accountants the $1 reserve was a heart-in-mouth moment for us, but the initial quick bidding alleviated these fears. We are very happy with the final buy price,” says Mr McLaughlin.
In addition NZICA members contributed a further $30,000 to help the courageous people of Christchurch.

Approximately ninety per cent of Christchurch businesses are supported by almost 3,000 local NZICA members, this contribution is an important way to assist Canterbury businesses and residents shouldering the February quake.

NZICA’s EQ Appeal closed at midday on 6 April. The funds raised will be donated to the Government’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
