Enable announces $260M contract to build Christchurch fibre network

Enable Networks has awarded a contract to Transfield Services to be its civil construction partner for Christchurch’s Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) network.

The work forms part of the New Zealand Government’s commitment to rollout UFB networks to 75% of the population.

The $260M, 10 year contract with Transfield Services is a key part of Enable’s $440M UFB project scheduled to commence in July 2011.

Early last week, Enable was awarded the Government contract to construct an ultra-fast broadband fibre network to 180,000 premises in Christchurch, Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Lincoln, Prebbleton and Rolleston.

Under the contract, Transfield Services will assist in the design, construction and maintenance of the fibre optic network.

Enable’s General Manager, John Humm, is delighted to have Transfield Services as civil construction partner.

“Transfield Services has extensive experience and expertise to contribute to the rollout of this important infrastructure development,” says Mr Humm.

“As a locally owned Christchurch company it was important to Enable that this contract offered employment opportunities for local companies and people. Transfield Services is committed to using local resources and this is expected to create many new jobs and contracting roles.”

Enable Networks built and operates Christchurch’s extensive fibre network considered by many as world class. Enable is seen as a leader in fibre optic network development.
