Auckland contractors hailed for high standard of safety and environmental planning

The Auckland branch of the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation has announced the winners of its environmental and safety awards 2011.

The AB Equipment Safety Awards recognise excellence in safety systems in construction services. The Hynds Group Environmental Excellence Awards honour high quality environmental planning. They are open to members of the Auckland branch of the federation.

Auckland branch chairman Mark Gregory said: “There was a very high standard of entries and it was very good to see such a variety of small and medium contractors as well as the larger companies entering and featuring among the winners.”

Representatives from the Department of Labour judged the Safety awards with the overall winner the Victoria Park Alliance for the Victoria Park Tunnel which also won the category for projects costing over $10m.

The other winners were CDS NZ of Silverdale for the Raleigh Road Stormwater Project (projects up to $500,000); Troy Wheeler Contracting of Papakura for the Auckland Motorway Alliance Guardrail and Minor Safety Improvements ($500,000-$2m) and Dempsey Wood Civil of Penrose for the Long Bay Subdivision Development ($2m-$10m).

Auckland Council officers John Dragicevich, Manager Infrastructure & Environmental Services, Auckland Council and Janis McArdle, Manager Environmental, judged the Environment Awards.

Winners were: HEB Construction of Drury for the Northboro Reserve (projects under $500,000); Dempsey Wood Civil for the Lucas Creek Streambank Protection ($500,000-$2m);Pipeworks of Mt Wellington for the Birkdale B Sewer Operation ($2m-$10m) and Victoria Park Alliance for the Victoria Park Tunnel (over $10m).

NGA Newmarket/Leightons was also highly commended in the over $10m category for the Newmarket Connection: Viaduct Replacement Project.

The Auckland Branch is a large, active branch of the NZ Contractors’ Federation.  It holds a variety of functions & events during the year as well as representing the members on issues that arise in the local industry. Branch meetings are held every two months and attended by around 200 contractors and associate members.
