Dominion Road Businesses Welcome Announcement
The Dominion Road Business Association has welcomed news that its busy shopping strip will not be turned into a 24/7 bus lane and that building designations, which have been place for many years, are to be lifted.
Association Chairman Chris Hammonds says he is delighted that Auckland Transport has finally conceded that removing on-road parking on Dominion Road was un-sustainable and would have had a negative impact on adjoining businesses.
“We’re extremely pleased that Auckland Transport and the council have listened to the concerns of our members and that on-street parking is to remain,” Mr Hammonds said.
“The previous proposals were characterised by a lack of proper consultation with the key stakeholders, resulting in significant opposition including a petition, collected by the Save Dominion Road coalition, of more than 6.700 signatures in a four week period.”
Mr Hammonds added that the lifting of the designations would also finally enable property owners along Dominion Rd to have some certainty and continue to attract high quality long term tenants.
Dominion Rd Business Association Manager Gary Holmes says the Association has yet to see the actual details from Auckland Transport.
“Any roading plan for Dominion Rd must not compromise the health of business, the community amenity of Dominion Rd or the pedestrian appeal and safety of the road,” Mr Holmes stated. “We look forward to working with the appropriate agencies to firm up on a mutually acceptable solution”.
The Dominion Road business Association added its thanks to Councillor Christine Fletcher and Albert Eden Local Board member Tim Woolfield for the role they played in having the matter reconsidered.
