Unregistered and Unqualified Hairdressers Cause for Concern

A salon procedure which caused a woman to lose clumps of hair is a timely reminder for people to choose a registered hairdresser.

The NZ Herald story (October 03, 2011) says the woman was one of several clients to have had problems with the same West Auckland salon.

NZ Association of Registered Hairdressers president Ria Bond says that an increase in the number of non-registered and non-qualified salon operators means there’s a risk more people will suffer hair and scalp damage.

“We’ve heard suggestions that expired and low quality products are being shipped in from overseas to be used by stylists who don’t have the required knowledge of how to handle them, let alone use them – they don’t seem to be aware the damage these chemicals can cause.”

Mrs Bond says it’s difficult for clients to have guaranteed comeback if a treatment goes wrong especially if the salon is not registered with the association.

“Registered hairdressers are bound by rules and a code of ethics. If a customer ever has a complaint the association is available to offer assistance in resolving the matter, if required.”

She recommends clients check their salon is a member of the association. “This will assure them that stylists are qualified or working towards qualification.” She says member salons had continued to raise the standards in how they operated and, it was expected good practice that there should be a consultation carried out before any chemical treatment.
