The Government's announcement to transform Idustrial Research Institute into a national Advanced Technology Institute connecting science with business, is the best single thing it can do to grow New Zealand's high value manufacturing and services sectors.
This is something BusinessNZ has been promoting for years, and greater investment in R&D formed a key part of our ManufacturingNZ election manifesto, so we are very excited about this significant step forward.
It has the potential to make a real step change to the high value manufacturing and services industries, and to boost our NZ economy as a whole. Companies can expect to have access to a more market driven approach to R & D from the new Institute and a much stronger emphasis on the commercialisation of ideas.
The move has come out of the Powering Innovation report. This was produced by an independent panel which included Phil O'Reilly.
