Dancing Water one of “NZ’s most exciting emerging stars"

Dancing Water placed as one of “New Zealand’s most exciting emerging stars”

Dancing Water, a certified organic vineyard and winery in Waipara, have been placed as one of the most exciting emerging stars of New Zealand Wine by The Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown following high tasting scores across many of their wines during the latest New Zealand report.

The result comes after four years in the Waipara Valley working with some of the oldest vines in the region, nurturing them through organic conversion and achieving fully organic certified vineyard and winery status in 2011 with Bio-Gro New Zealand.

The team at Dancing Water lead by Ross Trowsdale, founder and winemaker submitted five wines, three of which were from their Tier Garden Vineyard in Waipara. All of the Tier Garden wines gained 90 or 91+ points alongside their Oneuku Riesling 2009 whith 90 points and Tokorima Pinot Noir 2009, 88 points.

Ross Trowsdale has a long history of wine-making and came back to the Waipara Valley with partner Clare after working in Europe. From the outset Ross had a very specific plan for Dancing Water - “to make distinctive wines from the very best of New Zealand’s vineyard sites”. Focus is always the quality and integrity of the fruit which is why owners Ross and Clare chose to manage their vineyards organically from the outset. The couple have also chosen the non-interventionist route with careful handling of the wine in the winery - “gentle management of a wine allows the origins of the fruit to shine through, the resulting wine is individual and complex, which makes a much more interesting experience in the glass”.

Alongside Dancing Water the couple also produce wine under their Floating Mountain label, a growers collection of wine. The future for Floating Mountain is growing significantly and with this Ross and Clare made the decision to distribute their wines directly in New Zealand. Both Ross and new sales manager Blake Lissington have found "the trade appreciate the direct and regular contact with the winery, which makes a refreshing change".

David Graham of Decant Fine Wine Store in Mandeville Street, Christchurch said that “it was only a matter of time before Dancing Water received the recognition it deserves”. David has been impressed with both the Dancing Water and Floating Mountain ranges of wine - “I admire Ross & Clare’s commitment to producing high quality, unique wines that ensure a lasting impression is made on the customer”.

Ross and Clare select key vineyard sites in the Waipara Valley for the Floating Mountain wines and are encouraging owners and growers of these vineyards to convert to organic vineyard management - “we are actively encouraging growers to make the change as soon as possible”.

Dancing Water also own land on the Eastern hillside slopes of the Waipara Valley towards Omihi where they plan to start planting next year. “The site is very special for us, being our first investment in the Waipara Valley, chosen for its potential for growing great wine”.
