Motorcycle Group supports Government’s ATV Safety Initiatives
MIA members importing and distributing new ATV’s (also known as quad bikes) support the Department of Labour’s farm based safety initiatives, which according to a recently released report are working.
Clive Hellyar, Manager of the Motor Industry Association (MIA) Motorcycle Group said “Our organisation has worked closely with the Department of Labour and other agencies to develop this policy which focuses on changing behaviors including ATV riders’ attitudes towards safety practices such as the wearing of helmets. This change is being driven by an active on farm compliance campaign launched by the Department 12 months ago.
Mr Hellyar said “The policy also acknowledges that there are no “quick fix” solutions to achieving reductions in accidents and injuries arising from inappropriate rider practices which do not comply with the manufacturers’ recommendations.” Those recommendations, which include the wearing of helmets, are incorporated in the policy framework.
He went on to say that the comprehensive nature of the report and the fact that it was based on a systematic approach involving identification of a problem, measuring it, implementing solutions and monitoring progress was an excellent example of an outcome focused government policy which his organisation was sure would continue to show positive change over time.
Mr. Hellyar concluded “The MIA ATV group would continue to work closely with the Department on quad safety and members would be looking forward to seeing next year’s report.”
