New Zealand seafood industry welcomes release of ministerial inquiry findings
The New Zealand Seafood Industry Council welcomed the release of the findings by the Ministerial Inquiry into Foreign Charter Vessels.
“The New Zealand seafood industry called for a government-led inquiry last year as an independent means of establishing the facts in relation to general compliance and labour practices on foreign charter vessels, and identifying any need for change or improvement,” says Peter Bodeker, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council.
“We are pleased the inquiry has completed its review within its stated timeframe, and that Ministers have come back quickly and decided to act on a number of recommendations. Other recommendations are under consideration.”
Mr Bodeker said industry members will now need time to review and work through the recommendations.
“The inquiry’s findings will impact on some of our members’ operations and it is important they have time to work through this, alongside the relevant government agencies, to consider and implement any changes that are needed,” said Mr Bodeker.
