Sport Wellington Appoints New CEO
Sport Wellington has appointed Phil Gibbons to be its new Chief Executive Officer.
Phil comes to Sport Wellington from the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), where he has held a range of executive leadership roles. These include serving as Deputy Chief of the New Zealand Army and Head of NZDF Staff Europe, based in London.
Phil has significant experience in the sport and recreation sector. He has played an active role on the boards of Bike NZ, Manawatu Rugby Union and Wellington YMCA. He has also spent plenty of time working at a grassroots level, across a range of sports.
Commenting on his appointment Gibbons said, “I am over the moon to be given the opportunity to take up this leadership role at Sport Wellington. Sport and recreation has played a huge part in my life and created a number of superb opportunities for me personally. I am looking forward to being in a position at Sport Wellington where I can influence the creation of similar opportunities for people in the Wellington region, so they too can enjoy the benefits.”
Announcing the appointment, Ross Graham, Chair of Sport Wellington Board of Trustees said, “We are delighted to have attracted someone of Phil's calibre to the role. Phil has a wealth of leadership experience and will bring fresh energy and ideas to Sport Wellington. This will be invaluable as Sport Wellington looks to build on its leadership role, increasing participation and success in sports and recreation, throughout the entire Wellington region.“
Phil will be joining Sport Wellington in late April.
