Wotzon.com up for sale amid fears for Wellington's future
Leading Wellington agency puts Wotzon.com up for sale amid fears for city’s future
Wellington marketer and entrepreneur, Fraser Carson, is putting his long standing community events website, Wotzon.com, up for sale this month.
But as his FRESCO agency turns towards greener business pastures beyond Wellington, he has a message for the city that is already well known. “If Wellington is serious about retaining smart talent and creative energy, it needs to get a clear vision into its arts, culture and events future.
“In my opinion, Wellington has a choice if it is to remain an attractive place to be. Either it continues to rest on its laurels and under invest in its cultural and productive community infrastructure, or it can fully reassert its support for these things. If the city council can’t or won’t do it, it’s time the community and business played a hand.”
Fraser, with partner, Sheridan Bruce, owns and operates FRESCO, owner of Wotzon.com. FRESCO provides marketing and communications services, particularly to Wellington clients, but shifts in the over all business direction mean that Wotzon.com no longer fits the business model.
“FRESCO has been going since 1993 and Wotzon.com is Wellington’s original and only true community website. Started in 2000, we built the site because Wellington needed a decent events website. It has a great following particularly among the city’s out-and-about event hungry crowd,” said Fraser.
Fraser believes Wellington is the best city in New Zealand, but thinks it can’t last if some serious issues are not adequately confronted. “Tourism Wellington and the City Council rarely speak to Wotzon.com and on occasions have actually competed again us, and yet we provide a free community service to the people of Wellington. The bureaucracy is oddly competitive and siloed, and private industry still has too much risk adversity in its boardrooms to grasp genuine opportunities. So while we live in a great city, we need to do much more to keep it that way.”
