TAFE to teach Students how to get a career in hacking
The Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE joins forces with EC-Council for launch of Certified Ethical Hacker Course
• To beat Hacking you have to think like a
Hacker
• Ethical Hacking Course will help
students prospects for jobs that focus on combating Business
Cyber Crime
4 April 2013 - The Northern Sydney Institute, part of TAFE NSW, has joined forces with the EC-Council, the leading IT-Security Certification Body, to deliver Ethical Hacking Courses to Organisations, Individuals and Students.
The rationale behind offering the course is to bring currency to the growing demand for skilled staff in the info-security arena, where recent data from the Australian government shows that 4 out of 5 Australian businesses are subjected to cyber crime.
According to the EC-Council, a Certified Ethical Hacker is a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker.
Ravin Prasad, Director of EC-Council in Australia and New Zealand said, "We're thrilled to be working with the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE delivering our programs to organisations across all fields and their students. Hacking is a topic that needs not only to be talked about more, but needs consistent action against. We believe this course offers a way to train students to think like a hacker, so that they can ethically assist businesses to combat the cyber crime taking place in today's society.
In relation to information security, Global Certification not only allows students to have a global perspective on how cyber criminals and hackers think, but to gain greater employment opportunities in Information Security positions which employers are currently desperately seeking.
Derek Pola, Associate Director, ICT, Media, Arts & Electrotechnology at The Northern Sydney Institute said, "Our partnership with the EC-Council is a major step forward in being able to put together a suite of specialised programs for those wanting employment in the rapidly evolving information-security industry. Our approach is to ensure that the courses we offer students give them the best chances at getting a job.”
The Ethical Hacking Course combines class metrics, an advanced lab environment and cutting edge hacking techniques and real-time simulated learning solutions to combat rogue access point, denials of service, firewall countermeasures and monitoring honeypots.
The announcement of this course comes off the back of a recent Australian Government survey report released on Cyber Crime. The key findings of businesses who experienced cyber incidents found:
• 17% suffered from loss of confidential or
proprietary information, 16% encountered a denial-of-service
attack, and 10% financial fraud
• 44% reported the
incident to a law enforcement agency, whereas only 13%
sought a civil remedy through action from legal
counsel
• 20% chose not to report the matter to a law
enforcement agency because of the fear of negative
publicity
• over half of all organisations have
increased their expenditure on IT security in the previous
12 months.
The EC-Council said that the government issued report was needed as a wake-up call to business to get prepared.
Ravin Prasad added, “Twenty percent of businesses do not report the known cyber crime. This paints an unrealistic picture of the true extent of the criminal activity facing businesses on a daily basis. The result is that businesses get a false sense of security about the true extent of cyber crime.”
According to the EC-Council, the situation will only get worse if businesses are not prepared to invest time and resources into protecting their IP, their financial information and ultimately, their customers - including customer data.
Courses such as the Ethical Hacking Course offered by The Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE begin to address shortfalls in this area by delivering quality, state of the art training and enabling newly skilled employees to bolster organisation’s defenses.
For businesses hiring students who already think like hackers, it's a forward-thinking step to get businesses back in control of their own cyber security.
The EC-Council also offers several Ethical Hacking certification courses directly to businesses, to train within their organisations from within. The Certified Ethical Hacker certification fortifies the application knowledge of security officers, auditors, security professionals, site administrators, and anyone concerned about the integrity of the network infrastructure.
