Action plan to rectify Transforma ladders product safety issue

Brand Developers Limited (BDL) is taking steps to ensure that its Transforma ladders, models TR 33 (35) and TR 24, comply with a safety standard which became compulsory last year.

Models of these ladders purchased after January 2008, with an advertised maximum load of 180 kilograms, do not meet one of the tests in the standard. As a result, these ladders have been re-rated as having a maximum load of 120kgs.
Further, all models of these ladders have not consistently passed a ‘walking test’ required under the standard, which measures the movement of the ladder’s feet when the ladder is moved from side to side.

BDL is contacting all customers it has contact details for to provide them with new load bearing stickers which reflect the new maximum load of 120kgs and new instructions to increase stability.

In addition BDL is placing notices in retail stores where the ladders were sold and placing advertisements in all major newspapers.

BDL says the ladders can be used safely as intended in an A frame position. However it says customers should exercise care when using these ladders, particularly until they receive the new instructions, and not exceed a load of 120kgs.

BDL is working with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and following their best practice guidelines for product safety issues like these. The Commerce Commission is undertaking more tests from which further action may result.

Customers who purchased either of the Transforma ladders from Brand Developers will be contacted directly. Customers who purchased the ladders though retail stores or second-hand should contact BDL on 0800 008 666.
