Power to the People: Parnell, Auckland, responds to empty retail space
An innovative drive to combat empty retail space has been adopted by Parnell Incorporated, the business association in Auckland’s oldest suburb.
The pro-active campaign is designed to get locals and visitors to Parnell to have their say on who and what type of retail they want to see in the area. Despite the 2.1 percent rise in retail sales (Retail Trade Survey: December 2012 quarter, Statistics NZ), slow-to-lease retail space is the reality in many of this country’s town centres.
Large blackboard decals are being placed on empty shop-front windows (chalk provided) with an invitation to the public to have their say on what they want in their shopping precinct (see storyboard attached).
“We want to get key retailers to sit up and take notice of what we want in Auckland’s best little suburb. Here’s the perfect way for consumers to have some fun and make an impact,” says Miles Nathan, acting Chair, Parnell Inc.
A QR code on the window will direct interested parties to the business association’s website for full details on the space and the leasing agents’ contact numbers.
The campaign’s aim is to stimulate, entertain and, ultimately, get results. It will be monitored daily with regular updates made to the association’s Facebook page and website.
Parnell Village, established in 1973 by Les Harvey, has lead the way on many retail fronts. Parnell 40 years on, is proud to continue the charge.
