New Zealander Facilitating Civil Society Contribution To UN’s International Year of Family Farming 2014
Brendan Hoare, the General Manager of the Auckland-based company Organic Systems Ltd, has recently been appointed as the facilitator of the World Consultative Committee to the United Nations International Year of Family Farming 2014. Mr Hoare was already the Oceania representative on the Committee.
The IYFF-2014 World Consultative Committee represents over 360 family farming, fishing and related organisations from around the world. It is the liaison point between global civil society and the United Nations' Food and Agricuture Organisation (FAO), which has been given four specific objectives to achieve in the International Year of Family Farming.*
“It is a privilege to be working with global leaders on family farming issues”, says Mr Hoare. “The issues facing farming families globally are uncannily similar. They include debt, farm succession, land grabbing, endangered ecosystems, and a lack of connection between farmers and urban consumers.”
“As well as bringing a regional voice to the Committee, my appointed role as facilitator is a great opportunity to contribute strategic direction to significant projects”, said Mr Hoare.
