Iconic Mickey to Tiki Sells For Record Amount In Online Art Auction
Dick Frizzell’s iconic painting “Mickey to Tiki Tu Meke” has sold in a record sale at online art auction site Ocula Black.
The artwork of Mickey Mouse morphing into a tiki, which features on over 30,000 prints, posters and t-shirts, sold for $110,215 NZD – $45,000 more than the artist’s previous record.
The auction, which began on 26 April and closed tonight, originally sold in 1995 for $4,000 at a charity auction in Wellington.
“This is an exceptional result for a work which has proven to be one of New Zealand’s most loved artworks,” says Simon Fisher, co-founder Ocula Black.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest in the auction,” continues Fisher.
Ocula Black received record numbers to the site over the past two weeks. Nearly 10,000 people visited the auction site and bids were placed from all over New Zealand as well as ex-patriots living as far as Singapore, Jakarta, Qatar and London.
A bidding war in the final few minutes automatically extended the auction with the winning bid going to an anonymous bidder from Auckland.
“We’re thrilled the artwork has found its way to another loving kiwi home”, says Fisher.
