Wellington lawyer trades corporate law for chocolate icing to follow cake dream

Wellingtonians have a new choice when it comes to all things sweet with the arrival of Sweet Bakery & Cakery on the capital cake scene.

Launching this week, Sweet Bakery & Cakery is the creation of a Wellington lawyer-turned-cake-maker who traded corporate law for chocolate icing with the goal of providing Wellingtonians with a modern, stylish option when it comes to cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats.

“Being a lawyer was satisfying, but it never really lit my fire,” owner Grace Brown said. “I was much more excited by the cakes and cupcakes I made for my colleagues’ birthdays and morning teas!”

Sweet Bakery & Cakery allows cake lovers to order online bespoke cakes and cupcakes for weddings, birthdays and corporate functions and any other events where something sweet is on the menu. Sweet will also sell a full range of products every Saturday at Wellington's weekly Underground Market, located at Frank Kitts Park.

Brown’s experience in one of London’s premier cupcake bakeries (Crumbs and Doilies) has provided her with the knowledge and know-how to re-invigorate the Wellington cake scene.

“The UK is ahead of the game when it comes to the latest trends in baking, and from my experience in London, I’ve seen that cupcakes are evolving - moving to a less cutesy, more artistic and creative space - and I’m really excited to bring this new direction of cupcakes to Wellington.”

While the UK may have helped shape and define her as a baker, Brown says the Sweet name is very much a Kiwi thing.

“I see it as a no-nonsense way of describing the sweet nature of the baking I do, but I think it also nicely sums up the Kiwi spirit, where pretty much everything is just ‘sweet as’.”

Sweet Bakery & Cakery makes bespoke cakes, cupcakes and other sweet products, available to order online or over the phone. A full range of cakes by the slice, individual cupcakes, brownies, cookies and slices are available to buy from the Wellington Underground Market every Saturday. All Sweet products are baked and decorated by hand, in small batches, and are made with New Zealand ingredients where available.
