Fletcher Building workers run out of time

Fletcher Building workers in Auckland and Taranaki are out of work and out of pocket today as the company moves to a “new model”, says the union for construction workers, the EPMU.

The workers were given only two weeks’ notice of the job losses. While all but two of the Auckland workers will receive redundancy payouts, hardly any of the 37 workers in Taranaki will get any compensation.

“There is no financial reason for these job cuts,” says Ron Angel, EPMU infrastructure industry organiser. “Fletcher Building’s profit is up 76% this year.

“These jobs are going just because the company has a new CEO who wants to do things differently.

“He has the right to change how things run, but to give workers only two weeks’ notice and no compensation is simply cruel. Fletcher Building could easily afford to pay redundancy to their workers.

“We hope that everyone will be able to find work but they’ve been given no time to come to terms with the job losses and make plans for their future. Some may have to relocate with their families for new jobs.

“Fletcher Building has treated their workers badly and New Zealanders expect better from such an iconic Kiwi company.”

A small number of workers have one more week to work before their jobs end.
