Mitre 10 reveals New Zealand gripped by tool-borrowing
epidemic
With increasing numbers of New Zealanders turning their hand to DIY in recent years, Kiwis are in the midst of a tool-borrowing epidemic according to the country’s leading home improvement and building retailer Mitre 10.
As a result, the hardware co-operative has introduced a new range of tools at a price point low enough that DIY devotees no longer have to borrow from friends and family. The range, Number 8, is on sale now in stores around the country.
Mitre 10 General Manager Marketing Dave Elliott said the company started looking at introducing an entry-level range of tools after feedback from customers that they tended to borrow rather than own the tools they needed to get the job done.
“Our research showed there was a gap in the market for people who didn’t own tools but were constantly borrowing them instead. We also recently asked our Facebook fans if they had borrowed tools and not given them back, and the stories that emerged confirmed our suspicions. There’s a woman who borrowed a hammer 20 years ago, a man whose tools were stolen from his work wagon so he had to borrow a screwdriver from his six-year-old son’s toolbox and a pink hammer from his wife, and plenty of people who have had to borrow tools because theirs were borrowed and not returned.
“Some inventive folks have even set up ‘tool libraries’ to keep track of which relative or friend has which tool, and women have taken to buying pink tools to prevent the men in their lives from taking off with them.
“It’s time to call a stop to New Zealand’s tool-borrowing epidemic, and we believe Number 8 is the answer. Number 8 is new and exclusive to Mitre 10, and is purposely priced low enough that anyone can afford to indulge their DIY passions without having to borrow the tools to get the job done.”
The Number 8 range boasts everything from screwdriver, spanner, chisel and wrench sets to hammers and handsaws and will extend even further over the coming months with products across most categories due to arrive in store soon.
Basics, such as the nine-piece spanner set and the three-piece plier set, are just $9.99.
