My Food Bag named rising star in Deloitte Fast 50

Less than two years after it began operations, My Food Bag has been named national Rising Star in the NZ Deloitte Fast 50 Awards announced in Auckland yesterday (Thursday 6 November).

The award caps a big year for the Auckland-based home delivery business that in 2013 sparked a transformation in food retailing.

My Food Bag won a Judges’ Choice award at the 2014 TVNZ NZ Marketing Awards in August while in October CEO Cecilia Robinson took out the Business and Innovation category at the annual NEXT Woman of the Year Awards.

The business also expanded significantly launching new markets in both the North and South Islands and Australia.

The Rising Star Award complements the NZ Deloitte Fast 50 Awards but is for early stage companies less than three years old that are not eligible for the major growth awards.

My Food Bag’s Theresa Gattung accepted the award at the Deloitte Festival of Fast Growth in Auckland on November 6, where the final rankings of the national Fast 50 index, the national category winners and the rising star winner were revealed.

Theresa Gattung says 2014 has been a stellar year for My Food Bag.

“Being recognised as having strong potential for rapid and sustained growth verifies our business model and confirms we are on track for a Fast 50 position in the future,” Theresa says.

“All this on top of opening up deliveries to Tauranga, the greater Waikato area, Christchurch, Sydney and Melbourne. It’s very pleasing and a tribute to the hard work put in by our staff and the leaders of the business.”

Unlike the main Fast 50 businesses which are judged purely on revenues, Rising Star award winners are selected by a panel of judges from Deloittes and award sponsor BNZ. My Food Bag had to submit comprehensive accounts and Chair Theresa Gattung presented the business to the judging panel.

The My Food Bag concept is based on the home delivery of food parcels containing all the ingredients needed for a week’s main meals together with simple, healthy and delicious recipes.

The recipes developed by 2011 MasterChef Nadia Lim and are exclusive to My Food Bag and are regularly updated.

My Food Bag was developed by 2013 EY Young Entrepreneur of the Year Cecilia Robinson together with Nadia Lim and prominent business leader Theresa Gattung.

Launched originally in Auckland in March 2013, My Food Bag expanded to Hamilton in June and Wellington in August last year. In June 2014 the service crossed the Tasman and is now operating in Sydney and Melbourne. It has also recently begun serving Tauranga, greater Waikato regions and Christchurch.

Currently My Food Bag has 10,000 subscribers and has delivered more than 2.5 million meals in New Zealand and Australia since it began business in March 2013. The company employs 40 staff and turns over more than $30 million a year.
