Unilever accept offer for its Petone site

Unilever accept offer for its Petone site

2 December 2014 – Unilever New Zealand today advised that it has accepted an offer for its site at 486 Jackson Street Petone, following the closure of tenders in November.

Late last year, Unilever announced that it planned to relocate production of its laundry powders to Australia and close its Petone manufacturing site at the end of 2015. The company has had a long association with Petone and manufacturing operations began on the current site in 1919 with Sunlight Soap. More recently, the Petone site has produced all Unilever’s laundry powder for both Australia and the domestic market.

Unilever Petone Factory Manager Barry Pickering said, “The property attracted a lot of interest and we received a number of strong offers throughout the tender period. The successful tender has come from a well known property developer and settlement will take place when Unilever vacates the site in late 2015.

“The sale of the site will not impact any undertaking we’ve given staff about the term of their remaining employment at Petone. We anticipate that production will continue at Petone at least until mid-2015 after which the site will be decommissioned. The new owner will not take possession of site until this process is completed at the end of 2015,” added Pickering.
