The snow is back at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak ski area
Gale force winds and heavy rain earlier this week haven’t dampened the spirit of ski area manager Ross Copland ahead of Coronet Peak’s scheduled opening this Saturday.
“Although it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, Coronet Peak is a very resilient mountain and it’s amazing to see how quickly the weather can turn things around,” he said.
“We have had heavy snow showers coming through with around 10cm on our picnic tables at the base building and the mountain’s looking good again.”
Temperatures have dropped significantly, ranging from 2C at base to minus 3.5C and snowguns are “going hard” on the top half of the mountain. There is snow in the forecast every day from now until Sunday.
“We’re expecting snow on and off over the next few days, down to 900m today and Friday,” said Mr Copland.
“The forecast is for snow down to 500m on Saturday accompanied by some strong winds, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on that.”
