Christchurch Farmer Chosen to Represent NZ Beef

8 OCTOBER 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Christchurch Farmer Chosen to Represent New Zealand Beef on the World Stage

Beef + Lamb New Zealand has awarded this year’s Five Nations Beef Alliance Young Leader scholarship to Christchurch farmer, Marie Timperley.

The scholarship, funded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand will see Marie (25), head to the Five Nations Beef Alliance conference being held in Mexico later this month.

The Five Nations Beef Alliance is made up of the national organisations that represent beef cattle producers in Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States. It meets annually to develop strategies to encourage growth in global beef trading and address common issues.

The young leaders programme will give Marie the opportunity to meet other young beef producers in a series of visits to farms, feedlots and sale yards as well as attending conference and round table sessions to observe the organisations as they collaborate to benefit producers in each of their countries.

Marie runs the 390ha Timperlea Angus Stud, with 120 breeding cows and 220 commercial beef cattle. Before heading back to the family farm near Christchurch, Marie worked as a chef.

“I’m very passionate about the beef industry and am particularly interested in breeding with the genetics that make the steak taste better on the plate.

“Going to the Five Nations Beef Conference gives me the opportunity to meet some of the best beef producers in the world and learn about their farming systems.”

On her return, Marie will report back to New Zealand beef farmers on her observations.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief operating officer, Cros Spooner said supporting this opportunity was one of the ways that Beef + Lamb New Zealand developed future leaders in the industry.

“The Five Nations Beef Alliance is a great opportunity for a young New Zealander who is an emerging leader to gain exposure to a significant international beef forum.”
