NZ Electric Rubbish Truck Shows the Way

NZ Electric Rubbish Truck Shows the Way
GWRC Councillor Drives the Future

On the road to sustainable transport, Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Paul Bruce, got behind the wheel of New Zealand's battery electric rubbish truck.

The truck featured at an Energise Õtaki event at which respected Business Journalist Rod Oram told the audience that sustainable business is the way of the future.

The ZEV 9000 New Zealand manufactured truck, owned and operated by the Kapiti Coast District Council, has been on the road for over two years and has travelled over 50,000kms in that time.

"The truck proves the concept and the maturity of heavy electric vehicles," says Andrew Rushworth, Managing Director of Zero Emsission Vehicles, the Palmerston North based company that designed and built the truck.

"The ZEV 9000 drive and power systems are part of a common platform used on all ZEV trucks and buses up to 25 tonnes gross weight."

With Wellington city looking to scrap their electric trolley buses, Councillor Bruce's experience behind the wheel has shown him that electric is a sustainable future for Wellington City transport, and that battery electric is here now.
