Flourishing Christchurch retirement village wins ‘beautiful garden’ awards

Fendalton’s boutique retirement settlement, The Russley Village, has scooped two awards in the 2016 Fendalton/Waimairi Community Pride Garden Awards – the South Island Promotion Association Garden Award and the Community Pride Garden Award.

The awards acknowledge the village as enhancing the beauty of Christchurch city’s environment through maintaining attractive gardens.

Quintessentially Cantabrian, featuring a mix of villas, terraced houses and apartments, landscaped specimen trees, white picket fences, box hedges and flowering plants, the architecturally-designed village, which sits on the site of the old Russley Hotel, has about it a distinct ‘English Garden’ style.

The formal gardens, designed by landscape architect, Mark Teesdale, are full of box and escallonia hedging, roses, lavender, and rhododendron plants, and are meticulously maintained. A series of connected paths and community gathering areas lined with bench seats, pergolas and other features add to the romantic charm.

Graham Wilkinson, Director of Generus Living Group – the company behind The Russley Village – says the village community is absolutely delighted to win the awards.

Brian Cousins, village manager, and Linda Rollo, village gardener, were presented with the awards and trophy on Thursday 3rd March at the Russley Golf Club and Function Centre.
