Winter solstice
Winter solstice
Tomorrow, Tuesday June 21, marks the winter solstice. This means it is our shortest day of the year, along with the longest night – it occurs at 11.28pm.
The moment of winter solstice is when the sun's elevation with respect to the North or South Pole is at its most negative value (that is, the sun is at its farthest below the horizon as measured from the pole), meaning this day will have the shortest day and the longest night.
While it means the days will very slowly start to get longer, it also means the coldest weather is just getting underway.
