News that the Government plans to ratify the Paris agreement on climate change has been welcomed by BusinessNZ and the Sustainable Business Council.
All countries signing up to the Paris agreement must ratify it to ensure the deal takes effect. So far, around 23 of the 180 countries involved have agreed to ratify.
BusinessNZ Energy and Environment Manager John Carnegie said the decision to ratify was a positive move signalling New Zealand was serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"We will now need to work on domestic policies to ensure that New Zealand businesses can remain competitive while bearing a carbon price," John Carnegie said.
Sustainable Business Council Executive Director Abbie Reynolds said ratifying the agreement was a decisive step for New Zealand action on climate change.
"For New Zealand businesses who are already taking steps to address their emissions, this move will give them the confidence to keep going," Abbie Reynolds said.
