Taupō-Nui-a-Tia Management Board Resumes Work

Taupō-Nui-a-Tia Management Board Resumes Work

The recently appointed Taupō-Nui-a-Tia Management Board met on Friday 21 July and the new Board members were provided with an overview of the Board’s history by Department of Conservation staff. The Board elected Topia Rameka as their Chairman and agreed that one of the first priorities would be to complete the process for the Recreational Management Plan for Taupō Waters, a key role of the Board.

The Crown appointees to the Board are: Mike Britton, Member of the Tongariro Taupo Conservation Board; Chris Johnston, a Taupo business owner involved in the tourism industry; John Quinn, Chief Scientist – Freshwater and Estuaries, NIWA; and Anna Park a 3rd term Councillor of the Taupo District Council. The Tūwharetoa Maori Trust Board appointments are: Maria Nepia, Board Member; Tangonui Kingi, Board Member; Rakeipoho Taiaroa, Commercial and Strategy Manager; and Topia Rameka, CEO.

The Management Board was established under the 2007 Deed between the Crown and Tūwharetoa Maori Trust Board. The Deed sets out the framework for how Taupo Waters will be managed and requires that the Board is comprised of eight members, four of whom shall be appointed by the Minister of Conservation having regard to the interests of conservation, recreation, tourism and freshwater sciences to represent the public interest. The other four positions are appointed by the Trust Board to represent Tūwharetoa interests.

Topia Rameka said “the Board is looking forward to the work ahead of us and in particular the opportunity to inform the community about the management arrangements in place over Lake Taupo”. “Lake Taupo is not the same as many other waterbodies in terms of ownership, management and authority and it is important that we take every opportunity to share this unique and important story with the public”.

The next meeting of the Management Board will be in September when work planning for the coming year will commence.
