Ngati Ruanui takes its fight to the High Court
Ngati Ruanui takes its fight to the High Court.
After 15 days of preparation, Ngati Ruanui has lodged its appeal against the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to allow seabed mining off South Taranaki with the High Court first thing this morning (Thursday August 31).
Our appeal looks at all points of law and we believe the EPA has erred in law in granting the application to mine for Iron Sand off the South Taranaki Bight.
Since the EPA decision arrived, Ngati Ruanui and its community have actively campaigned against this destructive practice. Including three groups of environmental guardians linking hands around our Takiwa in recent days.
Te Runanga o Ngāti Ruanui Trust kaiarataki Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said appealing against the controversial practice was the only right thing to do.
“We welcome all innovative ideas that may stop this seabed mining.
“There is too much uncertainty and unanswered questions, and it must be stopped.”
Chairman Haimona Maruera Jr said he would like to express his gratitude “to our uri, to our descendants, to our community and to wider New Zealand who did not accept this for our country”.
“The minor economic benefits are not enough, including resource royalties to Central Government, cannot justify the environmental destruction.”
