Gas Line Repairs near Te Kuiti
A section of the Central-South gas pipeline at Oparure Road near Te Kuiti has been shut down following a gas leak which occurred during maintenance.
No one was harmed by the leak and gas supplies are unaffected.
The affected gas pipe is the smaller of two lines in the area carrying gas north from Taranaki and acts as a bypass for the main Maui pipeline. The affected section of pipeline has been isolated.
The First Gas crew discovered the leak just after 12:30 this afternoon and the area was evacuated as a precaution. The contingency plan was implemented immediately to isolate the section of pipe involved.
The section of pipeline has been vented and no more gas is leaking. Repairs will be carried during daylight hours tomorrow and expected to take about one day.
There has been no impact on gas supplies and all gas demand is being met through the larger 700mm diameter main Maui gas pipeline.
The cause of the failure is not known at this stage and a thorough review will be conducted once the line has been repaired.
