The New Zealand Emerging Leaders Awards are celebrating New Zealand’s top student talent currently attending tertiary institutions around the country - and the finalists have just been announced.
3 finalists in 7 award categories will take part in a challenging assessment day on Monday 9 July, in the hopes of attracting an industry-leading mentor, and access to unique leadership development opportunities.
The Emerging Leaders Awards has attracted hundreds of applicants from across the country, to compete for awards in the fields of Accounting, Business & Finance, Digital & Technology, Law, Humanities, Science, and Engineering. Finalists will compete in an assessment day with the hope of being recognised as an Emerging Leader in their chosen field.
The 21 finalists represent the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Massey University and University of Otago.
“The successful finalists are strong all-rounders, dedicated to their field, but active beyond it” says Seren Wilson, Principal Consultant at Talent Solutions, who co-ordinates the selection process for the awards. “While academic achievements are important, the selection process places equal emphasis on aspects like work and volunteering experience, communication skills, extra-curricular activities and awards and scholarships received.”
Felix Pryor, Marketing Co-ordinator at NxtStep, a sponsor of the awards, cited the opportunity to engage in psychometric testing and a best practice selection process, as a particularly compelling aspect for many applicants. “The ability to practice a graduate recruitment process, without the stress of the real thing, is a major draw for students, and offers them a great learning experience.”
Students undertake a mixture of individual and group assessments at the assessment day. The winners in each award category will gain an industry mentor from the Awards’ sponsors. This year, these are Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Deloitte, Accenture, Danone, Chapman Tripp, Auckland Council, and NxtStep.
