Balance of payments records the value of the country's transactions with the rest of the world. It shows changes in financial claims on, and liabilities to, the rest of the world. International investment position is a snapshot of the country's financial assets and liabilities.
Key facts
As at 31 March 2023:
Of New Zealand’s $342.0 billion total investment abroad:
- 69.2 percent was in the United States of America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan
- 8.1 percent was direct investment
- 65.9 percent was portfolio investment
- 6.1 percent was financial derivatives
- 13.0 percent was other investment
- 6.9 percent was reserve
assets.
Of the $531.2 billion total foreign investment in New Zealand:
- 57.5 percent was from Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Japan
- 28.3 percent was direct investment
- 49.0 percent was portfolio investment
- 3.9 percent was financial derivatives
- 18.7 percent was other investment.
