New Senior Events Manager Appointed To Help Shape Southland’s Event Future

Great South is pleased to welcome Julie Henderson as the organisation’s new Senior Events Manager, bringing with her more than two decades of experience in community engagement, infrastructure, and social impact roles across Australia.

Julie joined the Great South team from Sydney, where she spent 21 years working in the construction industry, including senior roles with John Holland and Downer. Much of her work focused on building social licence and fostering meaningful community outcomes across major road, rail, and renewable energy projects.

Julie said the move into events was driven by her passion for community and connection.

“I’ve always been motivated by opportunities to create positive, long-term outcomes for people and places,” she said.

“Southland has such strong potential to grow its reputation through events that reflect its values and unique identity. I wanted to be part of something that brings people together and helps create a sense of belonging.”

Julie said she was particularly excited about developing events that highlight Southland’s strengths - including food tourism - and supporting the wider region to realise its potential.

“There’s so much to love about Southland. From the waterways to the incredible produce, there’s real opportunity to showcase the region and support local pride, vibrancy, and economic growth at the same time,” she said.

Great South General Manager of Tourism and Events Mark Frood said Julie’s appointment was a real win for the region.

“Julie brought a fresh perspective and an impressive depth of experience in community-centred development,” he said.

“Her passion for people, her eye for opportunity, and her leadership style will be a real asset as we continue to grow Southland’s reputation as a leading events destination.”

Julie is still exploring Southland but already counts Manapouri and the Catlins among her favourite spots. “I feel incredibly lucky to live and work in such a stunning part of the world. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
