FreightInsure Launches Embedded Goods-In-Transit Insurance For New Zealand Freight Operators

FreightInsure has today launched its embedded insurance platform in New Zealand, enabling freight operators to offer customers ‘pay as you go’ cover for goods in transit as part of the freight booking process. Customers can instantly buy insurance in the form of a mini policy covering each consignment for up to NZD$100,000 loss or damage in transit, avoiding the need for underwriting annual or bulk marine policies.

The new service is backed by HDI Global Specialty SE (Financial Strength Rating of AA- (stable) by Standard & Poor’s and A+ (stable) by AM Best) and is available for local, national and international shipments. While all major freight types are covered, FreightInsure believes that the greatest demand will be for parcel and carton freight that is increasing in volume each year due to the rise of eCommerce.

“We’re excited to work alongside local freight companies and brokers to offer a modern insurance experience for goods in transit, even for low-value or one-off consignments,” said Simon Schwarz, co-founder and CEO of FreightInsure. “Embedded insurance turns freight protection into a service that’s easy for customers to purchase, reducing disputes over lost or damaged goods, while offering operators a new source of revenue.”

FreightInsure introduced embedded freight insurance to Australia in 2022 and now has customers in four countries throughout Asia Pacific. Market feedback shows that the ease of purchasing a micro-policy attached to specific consignments through the freight booking process, combined with a no-excess, fast claims experience, makes customers more likely to opt for insurance, providing a solution to a widespread underinsurance problem.

Michelle Price, Chief Commercial Officer for APAC of InXpress, whose New Zealand subsidiary is already using FreightInsure, says, “InXpress has seen great success partnering with FreightInsure in the Australian market, providing our customers with peace of mind through reliable, easy-to-use freight insurance solutions. FreightInsure’s service is second to none, simple, efficient, and seamlessly integrated, making it easier for our franchisees and customers to protect their shipments while streamlining day-to-day operations. FreightInsure launching in New Zealand allows even more of our customers to benefit from the same trusted protection and operational ease.”

Fiona Marshall, Director at Freight People, which works with Australian and New Zealand businesses to optimise and simplify their freight and logistics operations, says, “Freight People has been a long-standing client of FreightInsure in Australia, and we truly value the strong relationship we've built over the years. Their embedded insurance solution integrates seamlessly into our freight booking process, providing reliable cover that is easily accessible by our customers and responds effectively to the everyday risks of loss and damage. What sets FreightInsure apart is the speed and ease of their claims process – getting claims paid quickly means we and our customers can stay focused on business without unnecessary disruption. We’re genuinely excited to support their launch into New Zealand, where there’s a clear gap in the market that we’re confident FreightInsure is well positioned to fill, based on their proven track record in Australia.”

Once FreightInsure’s technology is integrated into the booking systems of freight carriers, 3PL and 4PL providers, and freight marketplaces, customers can instantly add insurance cover to their freight consignments. The online experience is similar to adding travel insurance when booking a flight or rental car. Claims are handled by FreightSafe, one of the largest independent claims managers in the Australian transport industry.

FreightInsure sees significant growth in New Zealand’s freight and logistics market, reflecting healthy export volumes and the rise of eCommerce.
