Tragedy On NZ Roads Involving A Heavy Vehicle
A devastating case has shaken the transport and construction sectors this week, with the company boss of an Auckland business admitting to manslaughter after a 20-tonne unroadworthy truck killed a roadworker. Leaving behind a devasted family that was expecting their loved one to return home after work.
But while the headlines focus on the individual now facing justice, this tragedy exposes a wider, systemic failure, a failure that allowed an unsafe truck, an unfit contractor, and a culture of “she’ll be right” to take precedence over safety, compliance, and human life.
The facts in the court report are damning multiple opportunities were missed to prevent this death.
- The truck was known to be defective.
- The operator had a track record of safety issues.
- The contractor was allowed on-site despite clear red flags.
- NZTA and other regulators had no effective mechanism to stop them.
The current system has no teeth. No one is truly held to account until it’s too late.
So, what now? Do we wait for another death or injury? Or do we act?
“If you are contracting trucks into your business, it's no longer enough to take someone’s word that they’re compliant. A clipboard induction and a promise won’t hold up when lives are on the line” says David Boyce, CEO, NZ Trucking Association
TruckSafe is an independently audited Safety Management System that verifies that a transport operator has the systems, processes, training, and records in place to meet safety and compliance standards.
Certification under TruckSafe means:
- Fatigue and scheduling is actively managed.
- Vehicles are maintained and roadworthy.
- Drivers are assessed, inducted, and trained.
- Health and safety is embedded in company culture.
- TruckSafe has 100% Totika rating
- It’s not just a logo or a tick box. It’s a system backed by evidence.
Contracting without TruckSafe is a risk you can’t afford!
The call to action is simple: If you hire or subcontract trucks, make TruckSafe certification a minimum requirement. Demanding proof of safety isn’t unreasonable, it’s essential. Lives depend on it.
