North Auckland Couple Claim $1 Million
A North Auckland couple can’t believe their luck after winning $1 million in last Wednesday 6 August’s live Lotto draw.
The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, are regular players but don’t pick up a ticket every draw.
“My husband asked me if we had a ticket for the draw that night and I told him no, but later I got a reminder about the jackpot so went online to buy one,” said the woman.
“We have a couple of favourites tickets we alternate between, and sometimes I’ll buy a lucky dip instead.
“This time I saw I had $12 in my account, so I bought one of our favourites which is made up of family birthdays and special dates,” said the woman.
The next morning, the man was reading the paper when he saw the Lotto numbers for the night before, recognising some of them.
“I said to my wife, ‘hey, if we’d have bought a ticket last night, we definitely would have won something, they look like some of our numbers.’”
His wife turned and said, ‘oh, we do have a ticket! I ended up buying one!’
She quickly grabbed her phone and logged in to MyLotto, and the virtual draw played.
“As the numbers circled, I couldn’t stop laughing, I think it was nerves.”
When all six numbers were circled, the woman scrolled up and saw the big number stamped across the top of the ticket.
“I just screamed at my husband ‘oh my gosh, oh my gosh, we’ve got six numbers, oh my gosh!’ - it was all I could say,” she laughed.
The couple shared the news with their children and then celebrated with a mini bottle of bubbles the woman had been saving in the fridge.
They are planning to invest their winnings while they make plans for the future.
“This is a lot of money for us.
“It’s not something we take for granted so we want to make sure it’s put to good use,” she said.
