A Monthly Celebration Of Canterbury’s Growers, Makers, And Producers
When Riverside Market first opened its doors, it was imagined as more than just a building – it was a true farmers market at heart, where locals could fill their baskets with seasonal produce, fresh bread, prime cuts, seafood straight from the boat and handmade goods all sourced directly from the people who produced them.
Over time Riverside has evolved into a thriving dining destination with restaurants, cafes and eateries that have become a cornerstone of Christchurch’s food scene. While this has brought incredible vibrancy and choice, the original farmers market spirit has quietly taken a back seat.
That is about to change.
On Sunday 28 September 2025, Riverside with launch the Riverside Farmers Market, a new monthly event. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Avon River, this outdoor market will return to the essence of what a farmers market is meant to be – a showcase of fresh, local, and seasonal food, brought directly to the community by the people who grow, catch, bake and make it.
By complementing Riverside’s daily indoor offerings, the Farmers Market creates a unique balance combining the energy and variety of Christchurch’s most vibrant food hub with the authenticity of a producer -led market right outside.
The Riverside Farmers Market is about more than just shopping its about celebrating Canterbury’s food heritage, supporting our local producers, and bringing the community together.
The first Riverside Farmers Market with coincide with Riverside Market’s 6th birthday celebrations, making it a fitting moment to honour the past while looking to the future.
