Waipā Networks And WEL Extend Partnership For Community Benefit

Waipā Networks and WEL Networks have signed a multi-year extension to their ‘Control Services Agreement’, building on a partnership that has already spanned more than two decades.

The agreement highlights how two Waikato-based electricity distribution businesses can collaborate for the benefit of the wider community, utilising proven processes and technology to ensure electricity continues to flow and people remain safe.

Through the partnership, WEL’s Hamilton-based control room provides support to Waipā Networks’ high-voltage 33kV and 11kV networks, delivering 24/7 control room services for fault response, planned switching, and permit management.

This means Waipā Networks can continue to respond quickly and safely to faults and unplanned outages, supported by WEL’s switching processes and experienced operators.

WEL Networks chief executive, Garth Dibley, says the continued collaboration with Waipā Networks supports network reliability and response in the region.

Waipā Networks Chief Executive Sean Horgan says the partnership gives his team confidence that they are backed by a best-in-class network management system and highly skilled network operators.

“It’s not just about technology. It’s also about people,” says Horgan.

“Our teams work side by side every day to keep homes, businesses, and communities connected.”

Horgan says with the Waipā District and wider Waikato region experiencing strong population and business growth, demand for safe and reliable electricity is increasing.

“More business means more electricity is needed, along with a reliable connection and efficient response to faults to ensure businesses can keep operating. This agreement plays an important part in achieving that.”

Both businesses say the commitment to the ongoing collaboration is an example of how working together can deliver practical benefits for the whole region.
