Wellness Is Core To The Retirees Of 2026 Onwards

Retirees in the next couple of years are going to be looking to purchase ‘wellness’ with their retirement village choices.

STIG Executive Director John Jackson, Senior Trust Retirement Village Income Generator, which provides secured lending to New Zealand’s senior living and aged care sector through financing of trusted operators, says the market is evolving.

“Some residents are selecting communities on the strength of daily wellness,” says Jackson.

The generation entering retirement wants an integrated wellness experience that supports physical, cognitive and social health every day. It is not unusual to see communities being built around a wellness model, reflecting this shift toward programmes that centre movement, nutrition, learning and connection.

Jackson says facilities that enable gentle movement classes, water-based activity and outdoor practice now sit alongside cognitive health workshops. A factor is that wellness is baked into the timetable and the built environment rather than treated as an optional activity block.

“Some residents approaching retirement say independence is a top concern, but that’s not a call for hands-off service.

“It is a demand for flexible support that adjusts without forcing a move or a change of identity. Hybrid models that blend independence with support help residents keep control of daily routines, which in turn reinforces motivation to participate in wellness programmes.”

Jackson says restaurant style rooms, and cafés, and spaces that support family occasions turn nutrition into a daily social anchor.

“Choice of venue and menu allows for dietary needs while encouraging connection, which in turn reduces isolation and helps people adhere to healthy habits. When food looks good and is easy to personalise, participation rises.”

Natural light, plantings and easy access to safe outdoor areas invite movement without effort.

Jackson says wellness has moved from amenity to value driver. “Wellness is not a line item in a brochure. It is the resident experience from breakfast to evening.”
