New Zealand's passenger car rental and hiring industry has demonstrated significant growth, with Scoop News reporting the market size reached NZ$2.3 billion in 2025 across 682 businesses operating nationwide. This expansion reflects increased demand from both international visitors and domestic travellers seeking flexible transport solutions for exploring the country's diverse regions.
The South Island continues to attract visitors requiring reliable vehicle access, particularly at key arrival points. Travellers increasingly choose car hire in Christchurch for convenient access to the wider Canterbury region and as a gateway to West Coast attractions, Queenstown, and Dunedin. Service providers at these locations have responded by offering additional features including complimentary roadside assistance, no-charge policies for additional drivers, and local knowledge resources to support visitor planning.
Queenstown's position as the Adventure Capital has similarly driven demand for rental services near transport hubs. Visitors to the region frequently seek car hire at Queenstown Airport to facilitate access to ski fields during winter months and year-round adventure activities. According to Infometrics, the national rental fleet is projected to grow to around 47,000 vehicles by March 2027, recovering from pandemic-related declines when numbers dropped 49% between February 2020 and May 2022.
Providers such as NZRAC have expanded their service offerings to meet evolving traveller requirements, including corporate groups, family holidaymakers, and budget-conscious visitors planning extended tours. The introduction of airport transfer services, meet-and-greet options, and well-maintained vehicle fleets reflects industry adaptation to diverse customer needs across multiple travel segments and seasonal demand patterns.
