Standard Travel Insurance Won't Cover You On A Cruise – And Most New Zealanders Don't Know It

Standard travel insurance policies rarely cover the risks specific to cruising – including cabin confinement, missed port departures, emergency ship-to-shore evacuations and unused excursions – yet thousands of New Zealanders board cruise ships each year without cruise-specific cover, according to a new guide published by personal finance research website MoneyHub.

The guide is the only published resource in New Zealand that systematically compares cruise travel insurance pricing across multiple routes, traveller profiles and insurers, including New Zealand coastal, South Pacific, Trans-Tasman and fly-cruise itineraries.

Key findings from the guide include:

  • Standard policies miss cruise-specific risks: Cabin confinement, missed port departures and unused shore excursions are not covered under most comprehensive travel insurance policies
  • New Zealand coastal cruises still need insurance: Once on a vessel, even in New Zealand waters, passengers are not covered by the public health system for onboard medical treatment – ships charge commercial rates
  • Medical evacuations from ships are extremely expensive: Helicopter evacuations from remote locations can cost $50,000–$200,000+, and without insurance the full cost falls on the passenger
  • Pricing varies significantly between insurers: The gap between the cheapest and most expensive cruise-specific quotes is substantial across every route tested
  • Cruise line policies are often not the best option: Insurance sold at the time of cruise booking is convenient but frequently more expensive and less comprehensive than standalone New Zealand-issued policies
  • Over-70s face stricter limits: Some insurers cap cruise cover at certain ages even when single-trip policies remain available

"The most dangerous misconception is that a New Zealand coastal cruise doesn't need travel insurance," said Christopher Walsh, Founder of MoneyHub. "The public health system doesn't cover you on a vessel. The ship's medical team charges commercial rates. And evacuation from remote waters is extraordinarily expensive."
