Amalgamation for Auckland cities
Plans for Auckland's regional governance avoid tackling the real problem behind Auckland's woes, United Future Leader Peter Dunne said today.
He was commenting in response to the proposal announced today for a regional Sustainable Development Forum for Auckland.
"Auckland's problems will only be resolved by amalgamation of the seven cities that currently exist, all fighting turf wars and none looking out for Auckland's wider interests.
"This proposal ignores the elephant in the room.
"Last year, I released United Future's plan for local government reform. The clear intention of it was to vastly streamline the structures of local government.
"I say again, as I did in September: New Zealand has 12 regional councils and 74 territorial authorities, 16 of which are city councils. In a nation of just over 4 million people, that seems to us to be a remarkably high level of over-government.
