United Future support for tree planting initiative
United Future spokesperson on climate change and forestry Gordon Copeland today welcomed the Government’s announcements concerning funding for initiatives aimed at halting hill country erosion.
“This, together with the tree planting incentives signalled in the announcement, accords closely with United Future’s climate change policy in relation to forestry,” said Mr Copeland.
“We supported the Government’s permanent forest sinks initiative and have announced policy to devolve carbon credits to landowners when new trees are planted.
"The devolution of these forest sink carbon credits will act to encourage new tree plantings (including natives) to limit soil erosion.
"Such a policy is a win-win which will help to achieve carbon neutrality for New Zealand and, at the same time, save around $125m per year in costs resulting from erosion. ”
