Call To Improve Consultation Over PCA Review
Call To Improve Consultation Over Police Complaints Authority Review
The Christchurch Human Rights Network has invited the review of the Police Complaints Authority to come to Christchurch after concerns about the review were raised at a meeting in Christchurch.
A group of people and agencies from the Christchurch Human Rights Network met to discuss concerns about a range of issues surrounding the Police Complaints Authority. The meeting had concerns about the difficulty of access to, and lack of independence and transparency of the Authority.
The meeting also expressed concern that the review, to be completed by 31 October, does not have any formal process to seek or invite public input and allow the Network to put its concerns and proposals to the review. The lack of transparency of the review process was seen by the Network as anti-democratic.
"This lack of transparency is unacceptable and this continues the disempowerment of citizens that many have identified as being a problem with the Police Complaints Authority", said Sharon Torstonson, spokesperson for the Human Rights Network.
The Network resolved to put its concerns directly to Hon Justice Sir Rodney Gallen, who is carrying out the review, by inviting him to a public meeting in Christchurch that will initiate a process of community consultation. A letter has been sent to the Justice Minister Phil Goff asking that Sir Rodney be made available.
