Last chance for Pork Industry

Last chance for Pork Industry

Dunedin based Animal Watch Aotearoa is warning the Pork Board to keep its promise to phase out sow crates in New Zealand. The industry can expect a nationwide campaign of direct action if it votes for anything less than a complete sow crate phase out at its national AGM in Wellington this Tuesday.

The warning comes as the Pork Board abandons phase out plans in favour of allowing sow crate use for up to six weeks at a time.

"The abolishment of the sow crate is one very basic step in reforming New Zealand's factory farms, yet the Pork Board seem unwilling to make any significant change " AWA spokesperson Clare Havell said.

"Otago pig farmers need to seriously consider what their stance will be at the AGM - whether they are for humane treatment of animals, or against. This is a nation wide issue, and any farms with sow crates can expect be targeted.

"Sow crates are unacceptable regardless of how long they used for - they are cruel, unnecessary and barbaric. Pigs in sow crates cannot walk or even turn around. The Pork Board obviously places profit far above any concern for basic animal welfare.

"The six week limitation is also completely unenforceable. Short of visiting every farm every day, inspectors have no way of knowing the true length of time in which a sow has been confined. It just won't work.

Animal Watch Aotearoa (AWA) is a grass roots animal liberation group, founded early this year.
