Misrepresentation of GE Issue "Despicable"

GE Free March: another press release.

Press Release: Dunedin Coalition for a GE Free Environment. 5/10/01.

Misrepresentation of GE Issue "Despicable"

Green Party Dunedin City Council candidate and convenor of the Dunedin Coalition for a GE Free Environment, Duncan Eddy, is concerned that supporters of genetic engineering have been deliberately misrepresenting the issue in the lead up to tomorrow's GE Free Environment march along George St.

A number of pro GE posters have been pasted up around Dunedin, some of which are clearly designed to mislead the public.

"One poster, which states "Don't believe the propaganda: saying no to GE is a death sentence for GE insulin dependant diabetics", is particularly despicable. I have a family history of diabetes and it disturbs me that diabetics and their families have been singled out by these propagandists." Said Mr Eddy.

"The Green Party does not oppose genetic engineering for medical purposes. We only ask that genetic experimentation be carried out safely within the confines of a secure laboratory. Our concern is simply that GE be kept out of New Zealand fields, out of our environment, and out of school children's lunches. That does not involve denying the sick of their medication in any way." Said Mr Eddy.

"Green Party logos are displayed on some of these bogus posters, and we are seeking legal advice on the matter. The vandals have been caught in the act, and we are considering taking the matter further." Said Mr Eddy.
