The latest work stoppage figures should give Government reason to pause before further loosening our employment laws and making it easier for people to go on strike, says Peter Tritt, Manager of Employment Relations for the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
"Though the latest figures show the hefty cost of the teacher action last year, the underlying trend also shows a steady increase in the number of days lost due to strikes," Mr Tritt said.
"The trend is a serious cause for concern as Government has signaled it intends widening the causes for which people can go on strike to include economic, social and environmental disputes.
"If Government goes ahead it will create a rod for its own back as the public service is the group most likely to use the extended provisions."
