Peace camp at the US Embassy - Friday 5:30pm to Monday 8:30am

Wellington anti-war activists will establish a peace camp outside of the United States Embassy on Murphy Street this weekend to voice strong opposition to the war on Iraq. This presence is to serve as a tangible reminder to the American Government that New Zealanders do not support this illegal and unjustifiable war. The camp will provide a public space for people to come and share their anger, frustration and sadness as well as provide opportunities for education, discussion and debate about the war.

Worldwide protests are clear evidence that George W. Bush, Tony Blair and the rest of the 'coalition of the killing' have completely overstepped not only the bounds of commonsense, international law and diplomacy but overwhelming public opinion. The war in its first six days has already initiated significant destabilisation of the region, with the Kurdish people on the northern border of Iraq being sandwiched between two rival forces, with little hope of American assistance. This is a resource war waged on behalf of US oil companies for complete domination of the Middle East.

Peace Action Wellington is encouraging concerned people to join the Peace Camp this weekend outside the Embassy. Please stop by to express your support, join in the talks, spend a few hours or a night lending your voice to the opposition. There will be a rally on Monday morning from 7:30-8:30am at the Embassy in support of the camp; please bring banners, streamers, noisemakers and signs.
