ERMA Report on Copper Chrome Arsenate Timber Treatment

The Building Industry Authority has received a report into the health concerns surrounding CCA treated timber, commissioned by ERMA New Zealand, and is considering its findings.

The BIA is currently reviewing its Acceptable Solution dealing with treated timber, and will draw on the findings of the ERMA report in making any recommendations regarding CCA treated timber. CCA has been in widespread use in New Zealand for many years.

The BIA had intended to publish proposed changes for consultation to the Acceptable Solution by late April. However, it is still considering a number of matters (including the just released ERMA report), and will publish possible proposed changes as early as possible in June.

Before finalising proposed changes to the Acceptable Solution, the BIA will complete a cost-benefit analysis of the impacts of the proposals, particularly with regard to consumers and industry.

An eight-week consultation period will follow the release of the BIA’s proposals allowing consumers, the timber and building industries and other interested parties to submit their views, which will be taken into account before a final decision is made.

The BIA has signaled a likely move toward a greater use of treated timber under the Acceptable Solution.
