An Evening Of Alternative Political Docos Tonight

The Antidote #4

An evening of alternative political docos

Wednesday 29th October 2003

The Classic Comedy Bar (321 Queen Street, CBD) 7.00pm $3/$5 October's screening features docos on a range of issues: alternative energy, animal rights, global economic justice and Latin America.

The Yes Men (a selection of video exploits)
www.theyesmen.org
The Yes Men are a genderless, loose-knit association of some three hundred impostors worldwide. Their feeling today can be summed up in one simple phrase: Guerrilla Marketing Lifestyle acted out in the form of pranks against the institutions that seek to vex and control us.
Although their name contains the word "Men," it doesn't describe who they are, it describes what they do: they use any means necessary to agree their way into the fortified compounds of commerce, ask questions, and then smuggle out the stories of their undercover escapades to provide a public glimpse at the behind-the-scenes world of business. In other words, the Yes Men are team players... but they play for the opposing team.

The Wind Julian Temple's evocative short film about wind power shows the bleak future we face without a switch to renewable forms of energy. Why continue down an energy path to famine, flood, disease, and climate chaos, when offhsore wind power can provide a sustainable alternative? (10mins)

SAFE - compilation of docos on animal rights Non-human animals the world over bear the scourge of oppression & exploitation at the hands of humans, violated in every respect to provide for a purely economic self-serving human population. Thankfully, a burgeoning and vociferous chord of compassion is emerging, of which New Zealand is a part. This compilation of clips put together by SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation) documents recent animal rights protests in New Zealand as well as the campaign to end circus animal slavery. It takes a critical look at factory farming and ends with the story of a New Yorker who goes through a crisis of conscience and devotes his life to educating people about animal rights. (30 mins)

Companero Piquetero World pressures on the Argentine economy have caused a tremendous collapse, leaving masses of workers and their families without jobs or homes. The local Independent Media Center leant a camera to a young "piquetero"(protester, one who carries pickets) to document how members of the Unemployed Workers Movement (MTD) occupy the land in the municipality of Lanus on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Edited in-camera, his insights into the nature of life in the slums, the divisions between the ruling powers and the poor people, the dangers and simple pleasures of his life show a people who are desperate, defiant and determined to carry on with their lives. (Spanish with English subtitles). (12mins)

Auckland Indymedia is part of the nationwide indymedia network that runs the independent news website, http://www.indymedia.org.nz This is the fourth screening presented by Auckland Indymedia for 2003. The Anitidote aims to be a regular forum for the exposure of alternative political filmmaking and media art.
